What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

I believe that the art of medicine and the ability to heal a person is a calling. I remember seeing the smile on a person's face after they'd consulted with my Dad, and I knew that I also wanted to create that feeling of wellness. Since the age of 5, this is all I've ever wanted to do.

What areas of your speciality are you most passionate about?

The generalized nature of my work, being constantly engaged with different people and their pathologies keeps the passion going.

What do you believe is the most rewarding aspect of being a doctor?

Being able to give peace and happiness.

How would you describe your approach to patient care and communication?

Patient-centred and familiar. I empathise and treat all my patients, as I would my own family, as I regard them as such, family.

How do you tailor your treatment plans to meet the unique needs of each patient?

Everyone is an individual, with their own loves, feelings and perceptions. Therefore, my philosophy is that there can't be a one-size-fits-all; every treatment plan must be as unique as the individual that I'm treating

How do you make the healthcare experience more comfortable for patients who may have anxiety or fear related to medical visits?

I approach a patient as I'm discussing with a friend. I also try to demystify the medical jargon, so that my patients understand clearly what is happening and what needs to be done  to be well

Can you share a patient success story that was particularly memorable for you?

I recall a young woman who was about to have her toe amputated due to poor diabetic management. The stress and anxiety of the event was understandable. Through several sessions of counselling, encouragement and monitoring with the correct medication, she began to feel that she could manage her condition. We eventually managed to avoid the amputation and she's currently living a happier life.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in your field?

Continued medical education is fundamental in this day and age. The science of medicine advances at speed. Latest research data and understanding of the latest protocols greatly assist with ensuring that our management is cutting edge. To this end, regular reviews of journals and attending talks both online and offline help keep me updated. I also have the privilege of sitting on the board of the North Doctors Professional Guild, which formulates strategies to keep our colleagues updated.

What do you believe sets your practice apart from others in your area?

I engage with my patients proactively to manage their health and take the time to explain why and how we treat their conditions and health.

What's your philosophy on preventive care, and how do you work with patients to achieve it?

My practice is built on prevention. I'd rather catch a problem when it's small and manageable than wait and try to catch up - at times it can be too late.

What resources do you recommend to your patients who want to take a more active role in their health?

I find visualisation a handy tool. With the widespread use of social media and apps like YouTube, I have curated selections that patients can access at their leisure. There are many online that can demonstrate and explain far better than I do, so recommending these can encourage and enlighten my patients.

How do you ensure a collaborative approach when working with other medical professionals on a patient's care?

I have created a network of Doctors and allied health professionals who have demonstrated a similar patient-centred philosophy, so we can work hand in hand.

Apart from your profession, what hobbies or interests do you pursue?

My time away is spent with my young family who are the eternal joys of my life. If I do find alone time, it's spent working with my hands as I am rather engineering-inclined.

Can you share an example of a medical misconception you often encounter and correct for your patients?

Your Doctor is not and should not be a dictator – do that and this and do not question me. That is a massive misconception. Your Doctor is your collaborator – together we can solve any problem.

In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing healthcare in South Africa today, and how do you work to address it?

Access. Through digital engagement, every South African can access high-quality medicine remotely and affordably.

What do you envision for the future of your medical practice?

I envision a point at which I will be fully online. Being online will enable me to engage with patients exponentially.

Have you ever done a courageous act and if so please explain?

Yes, standing up to Medical aid schemes that do little to help members, yet fleece them takes courage.

What is your opinion about NHI?

It is a great idea and should be universally embraced, however not with the current cadres.

How do you feel about AI in healthcare?

A new dawn which will complement the humanity of a Doctor.
